Doctoral Scholarships
The doctoral scholarships are usually advertised annually. The Board of the Ettersberg Foundation selects the awardee on the basis of the recommendation of the Academic Advisory Board of the Foundation.
Application requirements
- A doctoral project that – in line with the mission of the Foundation – makes a contribution to the history of European dictatorships and how they were overcome
- Completed undergraduate degree in the field of history, the social sciences, or cultural studies
- Doctoral studies at a European university
Applications in German or English must include:
- Description of the dissertation project (max. 5 pages)
- Sample chapter (max. 10 pages)
- Outline of the full dissertation
- Chronological CV
- Reference Letter(s) from dissertation supervisors
- Copy of university diploma
- If relevant, mention of the desired start date
The scholarship encompasses
- 1.500 euros per month (with a term of six months)
- For children for whom the scholarship holder receives a child benefit (Kindergeld), a child allowance is available for the duration of the scholarship
Scholarship holders are expected to:
- Present their dissertation project as part of the advanced seminar (Oberseminar) or the colloquium of the Chair for Comparative European Dictatorship Research at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena
- complete any reporting obligations (e.g. homepage, annual report of the Ettersberg Foundation)
- immediately inform the Foundation about the completion (submission of the dissertation to the University) or the termination of the dissertation project, including any obstacles that stand in the way of the realization of the project during the planned period or that require a fundamental change to the research questions or research goals
- notify the Foundation about any changes in personal and economic circumstances relevant to the calculation of the scholarship
