FOSTERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ACADEMIC RESEACHERS
Since 2016, we have supported up and coming researchers who take on the rigors of a doctoral thesis and thus contribute to the research on European dictatorships. We do this in the form of full scholarships for emerging researchers who are still at the very beginning of their doctorate and want to write their dissertation at a Thuringian university on a facet of European dictatorship research. We also award dissertation completion scholarships to researchers enrolled in a doctorate at other European universities on a topic related to European dictatorships who need support in the final stretch.
In addition to financial support, we always try to offer a platform for our scholarship holders to present their research and discuss it within the wider context of European scholarship. One opportunity for such an exchange is within the advanced seminar (Oberseminar) at the Chair for Comparative European Dictatorship Research at the University of Jena. Our scholarship holders are also welcome at events organised by the Ettersberg Foundation. On occasion, a dissertation topic also provides the impetus to organize an interesting event.

“The Ettersberg Foundation’s completion scholarship was a stroke of luck for me. It gave me financial security in the final phase of my dissertation and thus the support and peace of mind to complete my work. I was also able to take advantage of the foundation’s network for my work. For example, during a talk at the Chair for Comparative European Dictatorships at the University of Jena, I had the opportunity to present the results of my research and discuss them with other scholars. I received a lot of valuable feedback on my work.”
