Memorial sites are places full of memories and interesting stories. They are also excellent places for in-depth research. Both are necessary for a good radio program. That is why we invite school classes to our Memorial to learn about how to make their own radio broadcasts.
The project week begins with a guided tour of the permanent exhibition “IMPRISONMENT | DICTATORSHIP | REVOLUTION: Thuringia 1949–1989”. The students consider the history of the GDR, as well as the themes of detention, dictatorship and revolution, and then choose a topic for their radio broadcast. On request, we can also organise a conversation with an eyewitness to discuss their experiences as a political prisoner oder as a participant in the Peaceful Revolution with the students. Next, the media educators of Radio F.R.E.I. teach the students the most important journalistic basics.
The students write the script for their radio show at our Memorial, using the research they have done here, after which they move on to Radio F.R.E.I.’s studio. There, the students record their texts and assemble their programme using professional editing technology. Radio F.R.E.I. broadcasts the finished contributions and makes them available online.
