The Andreasstrasse Memorial and Educational Centre is a place of learning and encounter. A place where all people are welcome. Accessibility and inclusion are thus very important to us. Our goal: Everyone should be able to experience and discover the Memorial and our exhibitions in a self-determined way, as well as participate in all our events.

Below you will find information to help plan your visit to us.

If you have any questions or if any information is missing, please let us know. We are also happy to advise you and prepare your visit together with you.

What did it smell like in a GDR prison that housed political prisoners? What does an old cell door feel like? And what does a soundproofed detention cell sound like?
Answers to these questions can be found in our tactile tour. It is aimed at people with visual impairments and blind people who would like to learn more about the history of the Stasi detention centre.

We developed this tour together with members of the “Blinden- und Sehbehindertenverbands Thüringen e.V.” (Thuringian Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired) and the “Diesterwegschule Weimar – Staatliches überregionales Förderzentrum, Förderschwerpunkt Sehen” (Diesterweg School Weimar – State Regional Support Centre, Focus on Vision). In addition to the tactile items, detailed object descriptions and audio recordings of eyewitness statements are also used during the tour.

You can reach the Memorial by public transport. The tram stops ‘Domplatz Nord’ and ‘Domplatz Süd’ are both wheelchair accessible.

Stop: Domplatz Nord
Bus line 90
Tram lines 3, 6 and 4

Stop: Domplatz Süd
Tram line 2

The Domplatz Süd stop is approximately 175 meters from the entrance to the Memorial. From the Domplatz Nord stop, it is around 125 metres to the entrance. You’ll need to cross traffic lights along the way. The road is cobblestoned in some sections. We are happy to meet you at the stop and accompany you to the Memorial.

The Andreasstrasse Memorial and Educational Centre itself is mostly accessible. Should you have problems opening the front door, please ring the bell. We’ll happily open the door for you.

People with physical disabilities can use parking spot number 38, located behind the Memorial.

All three floors of the Memorial are accessible via an elevator (cabin size: 90x140cm; maximum weight: 630kg). Most exhibition spaces are accessible by wheelchair. There is a stairlift in the outdoor area where the prisonyard of the former prison is located.

Our event rooms on the ground floor and first floor are also accessible by elevator.

The stairs in the Memorial are all equipped with handrails. The stairs are not equipped with visually contrasting or tactile markings. Only the first and last step of a staircase is visually marked.

Assistance dogs are allowed in the Memorial and in the exhibition rooms.

A toilet for people with physical disabilities is located in the basement of the Memorial. It can also be reached via the elevator from the other floors. You can open the door with the Euro key for disabled toilets. You will receive such a key at the service counter in the entrance area.

Since there are not many seating options in our exhibitions, we offer portable stools. If you cannot find any, please contact our staff at the service counter in the entrance area.
