Andreasstrasse in Erfurt was a feared place in the GDR. In the remand prison of the Ministry of State Security (Stasi, for short) in Andreasstrasse, many political dissidents were interrogated and over 5.500 people were imprisoned. The usual accusations were: espionage, sabotage, underground activity, anti-democratic incitement as well as fleeing the Republic.

However, many more people in the GDR were monitored and controlled by the Stasi. In addition to the prison, Andreasstrasse was also home to the Stasi district office. On December 4, 1989, courageous Erfurt residents occupied the Stasi headquarters as part of the Peaceful Revolution. By saving countless Stasi files from destruction, they created an archive for the reappraisal of the SED dictatorship in Thuringia and thus also the basis for our permanent exhibition.

Our interactive permanent exhibition “IMPRISONMENT | DICTATORSHIP | REVOLUTION: Thuringia 1949 – 1989” traces the history of this historical site and the path from repression to revolution in the GDR. It is Thuringia’s most comprehensive exhibition on the SED dictatorship. On a guided tour, groups learn more about the eventful history of Andreasstrasse and the history of the GDR, as well as hear moving stories from the everyday lives of people during this era.

We guide visitors through the three floors of our permanent exhibition. On the second floor, visitors can see the intact men’s cellblock of the former Stasi detention centre, the largest exhibit at the memorial. There, visitors get an idea about the methods used by the Stasi, as well as about everyday life for political prisoners in detention.
